POSITION TITLE: Senior Center Van Operator
DEPARTMENT: Senior Center
REPORTS TO: Public Works Director/Senior Center Director
Purpose of Position
This position will consist of operation and maintenance of Glencoe Senior Center vehicles. Operators will be responsible for driving the vans to deliver meals provided through the nutrition program. This position will also be responsible for driving for occasional trips, as well as transporting individuals to and from the senior center. Operator will maintain all safety and maintenance checks. The operator will be responsible for keeping the vans clean: interior and exterior. The operator will be responsible for coordinating and communicating with the public works director for maintenance, and with senior center director for transportation duties.
• This is a safety sensitive function for the City of Glencoe and is subject to drug testing requirements.
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Operate a Senior Center Van to transport meals and/or Senior passengers.
• Drivers are expected to be familiar with the equipment associated with the delivery vans.
• Ensure that a vehicle is safe and dependable prior to operation by performing a pre-trip inspection including the completion of a vehicle condition report for each vehicle driven throughout any given day.
• Ensures the safety of vehicles for other employees by performing post-trip inspections which require the completion of a vehicle condition report for each vehicle driven throughout any given day.
• Must be able to perform all duties regardless of weather, traffic conditions.
• Performs defensive driving techniques by complying with traffic regulations and conditions.
• Understand and comply with City of Glencoe policies and procedures.
• The ability to operate all accessibility devices (i.e., ramps, lifts, etc.) in a safe manner according to manufacturer’s instructions.
• Completion of various reports including accident/incident reports and required paperwork.
• Following policies and procedures during shift without direct supervision.
• Be able to act appropriately when faced with an emergency by the utilization of common sense coupled with following City of Glencoe policy and procedures.
• Attends training sessions and various meetings as required.
• Maintains clean vehicle interiors throughout the service day; exterior vehicle cleaning is also required for Operators.
• Maintains a professional, clean, and well-groomed appearance.
• Must maintain a professional appearance that coincides with the brand image of the City of Glencoe. Must maintain a positive relationship in the community.
• Responsible for the general maintenance of the vehicles.
Marginal Job Functions
• Performs other duties as required.
• May require overtime work.
• May assist with training new driver as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
• Requires the knowledge and ability to operate large vehicles (10 passengers van)
• The ability to read and understand maps.
• Knowledge of the local region preferred.
• Must have an acceptable driving record.
• Job related experience preferred.
• The ability to follow a schedule.
• The ability to complete reports.
• Must be able to effectively communicate and follow oral/written instructions.
• Must be able to work during all hours of operation as required.
• Participation, when necessary, in Glencoe training sessions during regular shift schedules.
• Must be able to maintain regular attendance in accordance with City of Glencoe standards.
• Communication with Supervisory personnel regarding any license revocation or on-duty traffic violations.
• Communication with Supervisory personnel regarding accidents and moving violations immediately.
• Comply with and participate in training requirements as established by the City of Glencoe.
• Continuing knowledge of local, state, and federal traffic rules and regulations.
• Continuing knowledge of operational aspects of a variety of vehicles and associated equipment.
(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Must be physically able to operate a variety of motor vehicles. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements at levels of those for sedentary work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether like or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instruction and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgment in absence of supervision; and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures and to follow verbal and written instructions.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; determine percentages; determine time and weight.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with office equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to manage a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress with confronted with an emergency.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word). (Hearing – perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
